Help provide employment to former child soldiers with Global Angels

AMOUNT REQUESTED: $5,134

PURPOSE:

To provide employment and revenue generation for former child soldiers at ChildVoice International’s Lukodi Center in Northern Uganda. Effectiveness will be ensured by Global Angels.

ABOUT GLOBAL ANGELS:

Global Angels is an innovative international children’s charity championing the needs of children around the world.  They effectively pursue an ambitious vision to inspire millions of people, from all walks of life, to become 'Angels,' by putting their compassion into action.

ABOUT CHILD VOICE INTERNATIONAL

The children served by ChildVoice International include child mothers who are former child soldiers, children orphaned by war and children left destitute by rebel activity.

Lukodi Centre: This long-term rehabilitation center next to the Lukodi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp (19 km north of Gulu) is for child mothers and their children. These child mothers were selected from four IDP camps in the Gulu district according to the level of trauma they experienced and their current state of vulnerability.

Components of the center include: education, medical care, therapy to address psychosocial and spiritual needs, early childhood development, life skill training, vocational training, Income Generation Projects (IGPs) and assistance in repatriation.

ChildVoice International is developing into a self-sustaining community with capacity for 1,000 child mothers and their children. This center will be an incubator for emerging third world technology and sustainable operational practices.

Community Impacts of Child Voice International
In order to support the return and resettlement efforts of the Gulu District, ChildVoice has participated in several activities:

Health Clinic. ChildVoice opened a clinic near Lukodi which provides accessible and affordable health care to an average of 950 patients per month.

Education. ChildVoice constructed the Lukodi Primary School which provides primary education to more than 300 children, including the children of the child mothers in the centre who are of school-going age.

Water and Sanitation. ChildVoice assisted the Kulubel community to sink a borehole, providing a clean and easily accessible water source.

Food Security. ChildVoice acquired livestock for the purposes of breeding and selling and grows crops in order to reduce the food budget by 80% during the next fiscal year.

The Bakery Income Generation Project serves three purposes:

  1. Provide an educational employment experience for participants in order to train them in management, marketing, and business skills that will serve them after they graduate from the program.
  2. Provide participants with wages which are retained in a savings account, thus offering them the opportunity to begin supporting themselves and their families.
  3. Generate funds to enable the Lukodi center to become self-sustainable.

Long-Term Objectives

In the long-term, the bakery will operate a kiosk in Gulu which will offer the opportunity to train the participants in how to start and manage a small business. Once the kiosk has been operating successfully for 6 months, the bakery IGP will open a coffee shop in Gulu. Apart from making ChildVoice International more self-sustainable, the coffee shop will be used to train the participants in more advanced business and management skills. The coffee shop will also serve as a safe place where the child mothers can work once they have graduated from the centre.
